Why your AI keeps going back to old instructions

You told the AI one thing. Later you changed your mind. A few replies later, it's back to the old plan. This can happen when you move work to a new chat or a new AI.

The fix is quick: write down what changed, not just what's true now.

Make a handoff brief

Paste your chat and pick the AI that will get the brief. Free: 3 briefs a day per network. Your paste is not stored.

Write each change like this

Was: formal

Now: casual and short. Don't go back.

Was: 10 pages

Now: 3 pages. Ignore the old outline.

Was: Python

Now: JavaScript. Delete the Python code.

What it looks like

You ask ChatGPT for a report in a formal tone. An hour later you say, “Actually, make it casual and short.” Then you copy the chat into Claude to keep going.

Claude now sees both requests. Nothing in the chat says which one wins. So a few replies later, it may be writing in a formal tone again.

The old decision didn't go away. You just never said it was dead.

Why it happens

A pasted chat keeps every version of every idea. The first request can be longer and more detailed than the change you made later, like “actually, shorter.” The new AI has to guess which one you still mean, and it can guess wrong.

The same thing can happen in one long chat. Old drafts pile up, and the AI can drift back to an earlier one.

The fix: say what changed

When you write a handoff, add one line for each change. Use the same pattern every time:

  • “Was: formal. Now: casual and short. Don't go back.”
  • “Was: 10 pages. Now: 3 pages. Ignore the old outline.”
  • “Was: Python. Now: JavaScript. Delete the Python code.”

Put these lines under Decisions and Current State, near the top of your brief. Then the new AI reads them before anything else.

Three habits that help

  1. Step 1.Say “replaces” out loud.

When you change your mind mid-chat, write “This replaces what I said before.” It helps the AI now, and it helps whoever reads the chat later.

  2. Step 2.Don't paste the whole chat.

A short brief with only your latest choices leaves nothing old to go back to.

  3. Step 3.Check the first reply.

After a handoff, ask the new AI to sum up where things stand. If it lists an old choice, fix the brief before you go on.

Let KumiBrief keep track

KumiBrief's Decisions and Current State part includes choices that replaced older ones. Paste your chat into KumiBrief, pick the AI that gets the brief, and read the result before you use it. The model can miss a detail, so check that the latest choice is the one listed.

For the other five parts of a good handoff, see the AI handoff checklist.
